What Does a Water Softener Do?

A water softener removes the calcium and magnesium that make water hard. Installed where water enters the home, it helps stop scale before it reaches your pipes, water heater, dishwasher, washing machine, faucets, and showers.

The result is water that works better with soap, leaves fewer spots and chalky deposits, and is easier on water-using equipment. A softener is built for hardness; it is not a catch-all purifier for every contaminant.
