Long Island NY extends approximately 118 miles east-northeast from the mouth of the Hudson River making it the largest island adjoining the contiguous United States. It is separated from the mainland on the north by Long Island Sound and sandwiched by the Atlantic Ocean on both its south and east sides. It totals 1,377 square miles of land area and is divided into four counties: Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. Long Island’s beautiful north shore attracted the wealthy from both America and Europe during the Gilded Age. Its lavish estates earned Long Island’s North Shore the title of “The Gold Coast.” Today most of these estates have been turned into golf courses, parks, subdivisions, and museums. The tradition of fine homes and wealthy landowners is still alive as Nassau and Suffolk Counties are still ranked among the most expensive areas to live in the United States. Long Island can be considered the geographical border between the Mid-Atlantic and New England. While Long Island is geographically part of the Mid-Atlantic, many towns along the island's north shore and in eastern Suffolk County (such as Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson, and Sag Harbor) look more like New England towns than Mid-Atlantic towns. Still, many of the towns along the south shore (such as Long Beach, Valley Stream, and Babylon) closely resemble Mid-Atlantic coastal communities.

A commercial water softener works much like a residential softener does by pushing hard water through an ion-exchange filter to remove minerals (that exist naturally in water) and replace them with soft water.
